Leeds interiors brand Dowsing & Reynolds rescued in management buyout

Dowsing & Reynolds, the Leeds interiors and lighting brand

The well-known Leeds lighting and interiors company went into administration, but its business was immediately bought back by management, saving all 29 jobs.

Dowsing & Reynolds, the well-known Leeds lighting and interiors brand, has been rescued through a management buyout after going into administration. The company, founded in 2013 and based at Hunslet in the city, entered administration on 7 October as rising supplier costs and falling sales squeezed its cash flow. But in the same move, administrators sold the business and its assets to a new company run by its existing management – saving all 29 jobs. The Leeds showroom and the website are continuing to trade as normal, with customer orders being fulfilled and warranties honoured.

Leeds Today Why This Matters For Leeds

Administrations are usually grim news, but this has a upturn, a home-grown Leeds brand keeps trading, and 29 people keep their jobs. It is also a small lesson in how businesses navigate trouble, acting early enough to line up a rescue rather than simply shutting the doors. The wider backdrop is tougher: interiors and homeware retailers have been squeezed by rising costs and cautious consumer spending. But for now, one of the city’s distinctive independent brands lives to fight another day.

What happened to Dowsing & Reynolds

The Leeds brand, which sells lighting, tiles, paint, hardware and homeware and has built a national following, including among interiors fans, TV shows and celebrities, had run into financial trouble. According to the administrators, a combination of rising supplier costs and falling sales revenue caused cash flow problems that left the company with no alternative but to appoint administrators. Chris Brooksbank of CB Business Recovery, the West Yorkshire insolvency firm handling the case, was appointed on 7 October. Immediately afterwards, the business and its assets were sold to Dowsing Reynolds UK Ltd, a new company formed by the existing management in a pre-pack administration. The effect is that the brand continues largely uninterrupted, with all 29 staff transferring to the new business.

“It is promising that the Company sought such advice which has resulted in the preservation of a progressive brand and job retention for all staff.”

— Chris Brooksbank, Administrator, CB Business Recovery

Business as usual for customers

For shoppers, the practical message is that little changes day to day: Dowsing & Reynolds is still trading online and its Leeds showroom remains open, with existing orders being fulfilled and warranties honoured. Anyone with a query has been directed to the company’s customer email. Chris Brooksbank said early contact with insolvency advisers can improve a struggling business’s chances of survival, and described it as promising that the company had sought advice when it did. For a brand that grew from a Leeds start-up into a nationally recognised name, the outcome, continuing to trade under the same management, with jobs intact – is about as good as an administration gets.
