An independent national framework places the university in its top band for working with business which includes practical support behind the ranking for Leeds firms.
Leeds Beckett University has been rated among the strongest in the country for working with business, in the latest independent assessment of how universities support the economy. Research England’s sixth Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) placed the university in its top ‘Very High Engagement’ band for both working with business and working with the public and third sectors. For Leeds companies, a university running 20 live business partnerships, a city-centre knowledge hub and a new tech incubator, all aimed at connecting firms with academic expertise.
Why This Matters For Leeds
Universities are among Leeds’ biggest economic assets, and an independent framework rating Leeds Beckett in its top band for working with business is a useful signal to the city’s firms. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, a management course for SME bosses, a new health-tech incubator and a regional innovation network all give local companies a route to research, talent and funding they might otherwise struggle to reach. For a city trying to grow high-skill sectors, having a university this engaged with business on the doorstep is worth taking advantage of.
Where Leeds Beckett University ranks
The KEF, published by Research England, benchmarks universities on how well they turn research and expertise into economic and social value. Leeds Beckett earned the top engagement band in two of the measures – working with business, and working with the public and third sectors – and the second-highest band for research partnerships and for professional development and graduate start-ups. The university sits in a group of large institutions producing strong research across many subjects. Much of the business engagement is hands-on: Leeds Beckett currently runs 20 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, which embed academic expertise inside companies to tackle a specific problem. Recent partners include Yorkshire businesses such as Dent Steel Services and Zenergy Solar. The university’s KTP team was named best knowledge-base support team in 2024.
“To be placed so highly in the national KEF really reflects our commitment to deliver positive change and impact.”
— Professor Silke Machold, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Leeds Beckett University
Practical support on offer for Leeds firms
For local businesses, the more useful question is what they can actually tap into. Leeds Beckett University offers the government-backed Help to Grow: Management course for SME leaders, and in 2026 launched Carnegie Innovation, an incubator focused on sport and health technology. It also leads Innovation Pathways, a programme with three other West Yorkshire universities that connects regional firms to academic expertise in health and digital technology, and runs a city-centre knowledge exchange hub hosting events and masterclasses. Add specialist NHS-linked training for nurses and health professionals, and the picture is of an institution embedded in the regional economy rather than sitting apart from it. For Leeds SMEs weighing up where to find research firepower, that local access is the real takeaway.
