NG Bailey, the 104-year-old family-owned firm headquartered in the city, has topped the latest industry rankings, jumping from third to first after lifting turnover by 18% to £707m. The annual Top 30 report from the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) puts the Leeds company ahead of national rivals in a sector being reshaped by the data-centre boom. It is a notable achievement for one of the city’s oldest and largest independent businesses.

The BESA report, compiled by financial researchers at GHCS, ranks the country’s 30 largest engineering contractors by turnover and, this year, the combined total across those firms rose to £6.8bn from £6.2bn. Much of that growth is being driven by so-called mission critical work; data centres and digital infrastructure, alongside healthcare, defence, the energy transition and a wave of work tied to building-safety legislation. The firm, an independent business that is free of bank debt and carries a substantial order book, has ridden that demand while remaining privately owned in a sector where several rivals are backed by large corporate parents. The report’s authors described a market that is not just resilient but actively transforming itself around these higher-growth, longer-term sectors.
