Lottery Grant Fires Starting Gun on Harewood’s Visitor Overhaul

Harewood House Bakehouse, set to become a new visitor centre under the Reimagining Harewood masterplan

Leeds architects Bauman Lyons will turn the Grade II-listed Bakehouse into a new welcome centre, in the first phase of a masterplan running to 2030

Harewood House has landed a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant to kick off the first phase of its long-term visitor overhaul. The money funds an 18-month development stage for Reimagining Harewood, the estate’s decade-long masterplan, starting with the conversion of the Grade II-listed Bakehouse into a new welcome centre. Leeds-based architects Bauman Lyons are leading the design.

Leeds Today Why This Matters For Leeds

This is the second major visitor investment in the district after the Royal Armouries’ £100m plans. Day-trippers who stay longer spend more, in cafes, shops and hotels so an upgraded welcome centre is an economic lever. There is a supply-chain win too: the design work is going to a Leeds firm rather than a London one.

What the Grant Buys Harewood House

This is development funding, not the full build. The grant pays for roughly 18 months of surveys, planning and community consultation, during which the design team will firm up proposals and build the business case. The Trust is targeting completion by 2030. The Bakehouse, one of the estate’s oldest buildings, is to become a visitor centre with a cafe, retail space and interpretation areas, plus accessible facilities including a Changing Places toilet, connected to the Adventure Playscape that opened as the project’s first completed stage. Bauman Lyons is joined by The Landscape Agency and garden designer Matthew Wilson, who will reshape the grounds, including the former Bird Garden. The new displays will also tell more of the estate’s history, including its connections to the transatlantic trade in enslaved people.

“We’re delighted to support Harewood House with this initial grant to work towards a strong and resilient future for this significant site.”

— Helen Featherstone, Director, England, North, The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Leeds’ Growing Visitor Economy Play

The estate is a charity, and a costly one: the Trust says it needs to generate more than £3.5m a year to keep the house, gardens and grounds running and open. The wider Reimagining programme, which runs to 2033, also covers a reconfigured car park, a new arrival hub and restored pathways linking the house, Bakehouse and lakeside. Crucially, the Trust must still raise the money for the main build. It joins a run of heritage-led investment across the district, from the Royal Armouries at Leeds Dock to the regeneration reshaping the city centre, evidence that Leeds increasingly sees culture as economic infrastructure, with Harewood House firmly part of that picture.
