The growth investor with a Leeds office has ploughed tens of millions into city firms from Boxphish to Blue-i, and has just pledged another £3bn nationally
BGF has just passed £5bn invested in British business over 15 years, and a slice of that money has landed in Leeds. The growth investor, which has run a Leeds office since 2013, has backed a string of city companies, from cyber-security firm Boxphish to event-technology specialist Blue-i Group. As it marks the milestone with a fresh pledge to deploy another £3bn over the next five years, its record offers a useful read on where patient capital is flowing in the city. For Leeds founders weighing how to fund growth, the scale of BGF investment on their doorstep is worth knowing.
Why This Matters For Leeds
With another £3bn now committed and a national push to channel pension money into growth companies, Leeds scale-ups have a live, local source of patient capital. The tech and cyber names suggest where the city’s investable growth is concentrating, and where the following deals are most likely to land.
What BGF Investment Has Meant for Leeds
In September 2025, BGF put £13.75m into Blue-i Group, a Leeds-headquartered audio-visual and events business, in a round led by its Yorkshire partner Chris Boyes. The year before, it backed Boxphish, a Leeds human-risk-management platform that trains staff to spot cyber threats with £3.25m, adding another name to the city’s growing cluster of security firms. Earlier deals include £8.25m into Leeds healthcare specialist Primary Care Physio and £19m into Leeds bar group Arc Inspirations, the operator behind Manahatta, BOX and Banyan. BGF takes minority stakes rather than buyouts, which tends to suit founders who want capital and expertise without handing over control. Across Yorkshire and the North East, the firm had committed more than £400m by 2022 and deployed around £60m in 2023 alone.

Why the City’s Funding Stack Is Deepening
BGF is one layer in an increasing Leeds funding market. Early-stage founders can tap Finance Yorkshire, NPIF and university-spinout backer Northern Gritstone, while growth-stage companies court BGF and rival LDC. Yorkshire attracted around £1.5bn of private capital by one recent BVCA count, and Leeds alone is now home to roughly 9,700 tech and digital firms the kind of scale-ups BGF investment is designed to catch as they outgrow first rounds. The Boxphish deal is a case in point, feeding a Leeds cyber-security cluster that already includes AppCheck, Cognisys, Precursor and Assured Data Protection. With the firm pledging a further £3bn nationally and signing up to the Mansion House push to back British growth companies, more of that money should find its way north.
