The long-established Leeds firm becomes part of fast-growing, private-equity-backed legal group Orwins, in its fifth acquisition on the road to £50m in revenue
Milners, one of Leeds’s long-established law firms, has become part of the rapidly expanding legal group Orwins. The Manchester-headquartered, private-equity-backed group has made a significant investment in the firm, which has seven partners and 41 staff and is headquartered in Leeds with offices in Harrogate, Malton, Darlington and Pontefract. The deal comes alongside Orwins bringing in London criminal and regulatory specialist Roe Lawyers. For the Leeds firm, the move offers scale and investment while keeping its team and its Yorkshire presence in place.
Why This Matters For Leeds
This is a Leeds firm choosing growth through investment and it signals where the legal market is heading. Reassuringly for staff and clients, Orwins says it does not strip out jobs or brands when it invests, so the impact on Leeds should be continuity with more resources behind it. It keeps local people and offices in the region while adding wider expertise.
What the Milners Deal Involves
Milners is a full-service firm covering commercial litigation, property, public law, corporate, employment, private client and family work, and its current partners are all staying with the business and becoming shareholders in Orwins. Alongside it, Roe Lawyers, a boutique criminal and regulatory practice founded by Stephanie Roe in 2015, is joining the group, adding specialist crime and regulatory capability. Both deals were announced together. Orwins, which is backed by Scottish private equity firm Aliter Capital, now has more than 250 staff and combined revenues of £34m, and is targeting over £50m as it continues to scale. The group has made a point of not cutting jobs or overheads at the firms it acquires and lets them keep their identities – a model it says sets it apart from other legal consolidators.
“In Orwins, we believe we have found a like-minded partner, and we look forward with real excitement to the opportunities created for our team and our clients. Joining Orwins will take the business to the next level.”
— Simon Bass, Managing Partner, Milners
A Fast-Growing Legal Consolidator
The investment is the latest in a rapid run of deals. Orwins began as Manchester’s BBS Law, which Aliter Capital first backed in October 2024, before adding London’s Carter Bond and rebranding as Orwins in May 2026. Investments in Reading’s Clarkslegal and Newcastle’s Clarke Mairs followed, and these latest two deals now take the group to five firms brought in inside two years, spanning Manchester, London, Reading, Newcastle and Leeds. The strategy chimes with a wider surge in private-equity interest in professional services, including in Yorkshire, where deal volumes have risen sharply this year. Leeds is home to one of the country’s largest legal sectors outside London and seeing an established local firm become the northern anchor of a national group is a sign of how quickly the market is consolidating.
