Leeds United director Peter Lowy has thrown the club’s weight behind West Yorkshire’s Mass Transit plans, telling rail minister Lord Peter Hendy that trams are vital to unlock south Leeds’ full potential following the approved Elland Road expansion.
The boost from improved connectivity attracted government backing, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves reaffirming commitment to fund the £2.5 billion scheme beyond 2032, subject to business case approval, as the Combined Authority targets spades in the ground by 2028.

Peter Lowy, Principal of Lowy Family Group and Director of Leeds United FC, said:

Phase One Targets Leeds-Bradford Link
The first phase proposes two tram lines connecting Leeds and Bradford city centres, and linking Elland Road Stadium to the White Rose Centre via central Leeds. The Combined Authority is submitting its Strategic Outline Case to government in 2026, with consultation on preferred routes following.
